Maya Chia – The Miracle Moisturizer

Photography by Clifford Pate

My current skincare obsession is Maya Chia, the beauty oil made by real Chia seeds and the best part is that it’s local and 100% natural.  With so many products out in the market it’s hard to filter out what’s good and what’s mediocre.  There’s no guessing with Maya Chia, the proof is in the oil.  Chia seeds contain the richest source of omegas, antioxidants and minerals which results in skin hydration, deep moisturizing qualities, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Susanne Norwitz, the founder of the company, is a Daniel Island dweller and is proud to call Charleston her home base for her company.  With her product line being less than a year old, she has already measured much success in both press and retail outlets.  Major publications such as Teen Vogue, Nylon, New Beauty, and Glamour have featured her products as well as Gwyneth Paltrow’s blog Goop.  Local stores such as Urban Nirvana, Pink Dot Beauty Bar, Capelli Studio Salons, and Ooh! Beautiful  quickly took notice and have been stocking up on the miracle moisturizer. But for Susanne Norwitz creating a product that she’s passionate about isn’t enough, she also wants to give back.   Maya Chia has partnered with Adopt-a-Village. For every sale she makes, she donates money to the Adopt-a-Village mission in northwest Guatemala to improve education, health and economic conditions for the Maya people.

A Dandy Affair

Last Saturday night was a lovely evening of fashion, art, sweet treats, and great company at the Dandy Boutique event.  When Holly the owner of Dandy asked me to style her fall fashion show at Ro Sham Beaux I jumped at the opportunity. I love the whimsical, retro inspired clothes and accessories she stocks in her downtown shop and working with her has been a dream.  The modern and chic lifestyle store Ro Sham Beaux on Broad was the perfect setting for the event.

With the talented and incredibly sweet Holly McGetrick of Dandy Boutique.

I had a ball styling all of these beautiful ladies.  So grateful for the beauty squad that glammed up the girls – Rebekah of Lure & Ravish & Elina of Bellelina Studio for the makeup and Stella Nova West Ashley for the gorgeous hair.  Thank you Allie Newman, Mikal Davis,  Molly Rhyne,  Jessica Pfeiffer,  Nashonda Hunter, Brandi Bynum,  Taylor Avery, Parker Bellingham, Blaine Eads, Chelsea Rampersant, Amanda Lougee for letting me play dress up with you!

One of my favorite people, fashion illustrator Daniel Velasco came back into town to grace us with talents again.  People lined up to get their portraits painted by Daniel as he banged out over 20 paintings in under 3 hours!  Even my son Mateo stood frozen in his pose for 5 minutes while Daniel whipped up a dashing version of him.

One of my favorite parts of this event was the great mix of guests we had.  From babies to grandmas’ everyone had a blast.  Blogger momma Tara Langdale of Northern Lights Southern Belles always has the best accessories, including her baby Maverick.  This little man was the most well behaved guest at the party.

Pure Fluff Cotton Candy Co kept the guests happy with their organic flavored pumpkin spice and sugar cookie flavors.  I think my boys Sebastian and Mateo overdosed on them, sneaking outside for seconds and thirds.

The gorgeous models off duty.

Thank you to Jonatan and Deja for helping me get the models dressed backstage!

For my latest blog posts I had the pleasure of shooting at the swanky new restaurant 492 King.  It represents what’s currently happening in Charleston – ambitious modern design while preserving the past.  The building dates back to the late 1800s and sat vacant since Hurricane Hugo until it was scooped up by the Relish Restaurant Group. Every detail was put into this beautiful space from the button wall art installation, luxe seating and lighting, the organic rooftop garden, and the courtyard gates that mimic the street map of Upper King where the restaurant is located. But the most important thing is the delicious food and presentation.  You almost don’t want to dive into your plate because each dish is a work of art.

The Unity issue of Charlie Magazine represents Charleston as a city coming together after the  Mother Emanuel AME tragedy.  Photographer Mark Stetler along with his wife Caroline Knopf, and art director Greg Colleton collaborated on the concept of “One Country” where all races and ages live and work together as a community.  On a hot and steamy August day in McClellanville around 30 people including crew and models volunteered their time to produce these powerful images.  The final product shows the unity of everyone coming together for the same cause – one love, one people, one city, our past, our future.
