Captivated by Capers

After living in Charleston for 13 years it’s hard to believe that I’m still discovering this town.  During my stay at Wild Dunes Resort a couple of weeks ago, I took one of their excursions – an eco-tour to Capers Island and I was blown away.  The van ride from the resort to the Isle of Palms marina was a quick 5 minute ride and we hopped on a boat with Barrier Island Eco Tours.

Our guides shared their knowledge of the rich waters filled with marine life and how much our environment impacts the eco-system.  They’ve built up quite the collection of shells, bones, and even native American pottery over the years.  The hour long tour on the way to Capers was an adventure filled with crab catching, bird watching, and we were lucky enough to see a few dolphins jumping out of the water.

Our guides pulled up their crab traps and brought them on board so we could get some hands on experience.  We learned the difference between a male and female crab and the crabs that are native to South Carolina.  Mateo carefully held up a female stone crab, we heard you don’t want to mess with those claws.

When we finally landed on Capers I felt like I was an explorer discovering an unknown island.  This nature preserve displays some of the most untouched beauty I’ve ever seen.  Washed up trees scattered like sculptures in the sand.

We found so many perfect conch shells everywhere and they were huge!

There’s nothing like escaping with the family and discovering new places.  If you want to get away for the weekend and take it all in, Wild Dunes Resort should be on the top of your list.  This island destination curates the best packages for the ultimate coastal experience.   I can’t wait to go back and explore more!
