Discovering new talent is my passion and at the recent Charleston Fashion Week I met a group of exceptionally talented women from Savannah at the Style Lounge. Eva Design House which is a showroom/incubator for emerging accessory designers based in Savannah showcased wares from jewelry designer Kristen Baird and bag designer Ellia Wang. It was refreshing to see original designs and impeccable craftsmanship in the jewelry and handbags. These SCAD alums represent the modern design movement that is currently happening in the south and it’s very exciting.
Kristen Baird’s jewelry is both organic and sculptural. She draws inspiration from nature such as honeycombs, flowers, rain, and waterfalls as well as architecture. I was first drawn to her designs when I saw it in the Grand Bohemian Charleston gallery shop and styled her jewelry for the cover of Charleston Magazine‘s March issue. Kristen will be back in Charleston for her “Moving Metals” trunk show at the Grand Bohemian Charleston gallery on June 11th where you can meet the artist from 5:30-8pm as well as June 12th from 1-4pm for Second Sunday.
Combining origami, geometric shapes as well as nature, Ellia Wang’s innovative bags are unique and one of a kind. She uses her impeccable eye for detail as she handcrafts each bag, a skill that is rare in the age of mass production. The materials that Ellia uses are of the finest quality from Italian calf leather to minimal gold hardware. The Marble Sharp Wristlet bag featured here is a marble pattern that’s printed on suede. Ellia Wang’s bags recently got picked up at local retailers the Trunk Show and Maris Dehart, which is slated to open in July.
