I love a good makeover and I knew that our half bathroom downstairs was in need of one badly. Because of our guests it’s the most used bathroom in the house, so we really wanted to create a fun and playful vibe with wallpaper. The challenge of finding the perfect wallpaper was daunting because there are so many great ones out there. Initially I wanted something tropical with palm leaves, but after looking at one too many banana leaf bathrooms on Pinterest I was burned out. Luckily my good friend Julianne Taylor recently designed a wallpaper collection with Mitchell Black inspired by her trip to Togo. If you don’t know about Mitchell Black yet, check them out. They do artist collabs with people like Grey Malin and design cutting edge contemporary wallpaper that will give your home major personality. The lavender palm print was the perfect tropical vibe without being literal. We loved the wallpaper so much we had to make use of every inch of our space by covering the ceiling too.
I have another connection in my pretty powder room thanks to Julianne. She gave me hand stitched cocktail napkins of fashion icons by Lettermade, a brand that’s based in Winter Park, Orlando my hometown. Instead of these beautiful creations tucked away in a drawer I can have Karl, Anna, Coco, and Iris reign domain the powder room. Since the napkins aren’t a standard size to frame I designed custom ones on Art to Frames. There’s a million different designs you can make to customize to your needs and the prices are very reasonable.
After the hideous yellow and blue tiles that hid pipes that came out of the side of the wall, we knew we wanted something modern and minimalist with a floating vanity. Even though it was a pain in the butt for our contractor to move the pipes and do a wall mounted faucet it was well worth it. The light is designed by Kelly Wearstler (one of my favorite interior designers) for Circa Lighting. I looked all over online and locally for a gold and lucite mirror and found the perfect one at Celadon Home. The towel ring from Emtek was the perfect hue of gold that went with all of the hardware. All of our doorknobs are by Emtek and I couldn’t be happier with the glam look. We knew we couldn’t just get any old hand towel from Target so had custom ones made by Weezie Towels. This Savannah based brand makes towels that you can customize by embroidery and trim colors. We opted for a monogram S for Serrano. The terry cotton is also the softest and so absorbent. Nothing but the best for our guests!
Of course I had to run everything by my interior designer friend Lauren Messina. She’s guided me to make all the right choices and I don’t make a decision until I get her OK. I never knew how overwhelming designing a space could be, even if it’s small one. Our powder room went from 80’s nautical to a modern glam oasis.
